Course Description & Objectives
Objectives:
The course intends to provide a strategic perspective of mergers and acquisitions (M&As) as a key vehicle for firm growth. The course seeks to integrate both theoretical and empirical aspects of M&A literature from various disciplines such as management, international business, finance and economics and introduces participants to multiple dimensions of the M&A process. Participants would be exposed to various ex-ante and ex-post research enquiries encountered during the M&A process. Some of the theoretical underpinnings relate to neoclassical and behavioral theories, springboarding, resource based view, transaction cost theory, institutional theory, signaling theory and organizational legitimacy among others.
Class Preparation
Participants are expected to present and discuss the readings assigned for each session and prepare a 1-2 page summary of the readings. These would be supplemented with individual/group assignments. Focus is on understanding and critically evaluating the readings by identifying both their strengths and weaknesses leading to possible research questions for future research.
