Course Description & Objectives
Introduction:
This is a policy-oriented course which focuses broadly on economic development policies aimed at fostering inclusive growth. The course will present macro- and international perspectives on development and growth. It begins with an overview of the contributions of institutions and governance in economic progress. The course then discusses various development models, economic systems and development achievements. The latter includes how world incomes, poverty, and inequality have evolved historically and during recent decades. We next consider the contributions of human capital and factor accumulation to economic growth. The role of the financial sector in promoting development and as a source of risk is examined next. The focus then shifts to the benefits and costs of globalization, international trade, and international migration. We will also cover foreign aid, debt relief, and international development cooperation, particularly in the context of the Covid-19 crisis in 2020-21.
Objectives:
To equip future managers with a solid understanding of economic development & growth issues to enable them to contribute to successful development outcomes and interface with various stakeholders involved in development, such as government policymakers, civil society, NGOs, and international development agencies.
