Course Description & Objectives
Description:
This seminar will provide an overview of the importance of online content. With the emergence of web 2.0 there is a deluge of online text. Technologies like online communities, social media, crowd funding platforms have further contributed to the volume and variety of content. The course covers analysis of different kinds of online text originating from reviews, blogs, social media, crowd funding and its multifaceted impact on businesses. It covers empirical papers largely from the IS and various other disciplines where the textual analysis and impact of online text has been being studied.

Objectives:
The learning objectives are as follows:
  • Examine the different theories used in ascertaining the importance of content.
  • Appreciate various text mining techniques and statistical methods.
  • Understand how text informs different contexts/disciplines and industries.
  • Understand the analysis of blogs and its impact on the business.
  • Understand the analysis of online reviews and its impact on the business.
  • Understand the analysis of user generated content on social media and its impact on the business.
  • Understand the analysis of firm generated content on social media and its impact on the business.
  • Understand the importance of content for crowd funding platforms.
  • Appreciate how online content can be made more engaging.
  • Learn about some of the secondary data sources available to conduct research on online text.

Pedagogy
This seminar course will consist of discussion of research papers by doctoral candidates. For each session the participants are expected to present the paper and brainstorm on possible extension of the research. The students will also have to develop a term project that is broadly related to the contents of the course.
